Hiking and Trekking Tours

At Iguana Mama we offer you different options for one-day hikes in National Parks and Protected Areas and the chance to trek to Pico Duarte (3,087 m), the highest mountain in the Caribbean. Be ready for a real adventure!

National Park El Choco Hike

Check out one of the newest national parks in the country. An incredible 77 square kms of jungle, lagoon, caves, forest and open backcountry to explore.

What better way to learn the Spanish names of various plants, trees and fruits than through smelling, touching, climbing and tasting the real and thing?

And what about discovering and swimming in a natural cave?.

Rated: All levels.

Mount Isabel de Torres Hike

One of the protected scientific reserves in the country. Mount Isabel de Torres is also home to the highest manicured gardens in the Caribbean and 5 indigenous birds.

Hiking through humid forest, this tropical expedition starts at sea level and ends at 2,700 feet.

We enjoy lunch with breathtaking views of Puerto Plata Bay and then the relaxing cable car down!

Rated: Intermediate/Advanced hikers.

Pico Duarte Trek (3 days/2 nights)

What better way to discover a country than to trek it and climb it's highest peak?

At Iguana Mama we are specialists in hiking and trekking. In addition to different options for one-day hikes in National Parks and Protected Areas we offer you the chance to trek to Pico Duarte (3,087 m), the highest mountain in the Caribbean. Be ready for a real adventure!

DAY 1

• Drive from Cabarete to La Cienaga. Meet up with local guides and pack mules (4.5 hours).
• Trek: La Cienega de Manabao to Los Tablones (4.5 Km, elevation 1100 m to 1270 m).
• Accommodations: Cabin or Tent camping in Los Tablones.

DAY 2

• Los Tablones to La Comparticion (11.5 Km, 1270 m to 2450 m).
• Accommodations: Cabin or Tent camping in La Comparticion.

DAY 3

• Hike to the summit of Pico Duarte for Sun Rise, then to La Cienaga de Manabao (31 Km, 2450 m to 3087 m to 1100 m).
• Transport: La Cienega de Manabao to Jarabacoa to Cabarete (4.5 hours).

Practical Information

Level: Intermediate to Advanced hikers. Athletic beginners can enjoy this trip with mule support.
